Businesses make holidays happier for needy

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (December 10, 2010) - Several Sterling Heights companies and groups are making the holidays a little happier for those in need by donating gifts to be distributed through the city's holiday assistance program.

Each year, the city's Community Relations Department works with area service clubs, churches and other organizations in November to develop a master list of families that need help during the holidays for items such as Christmas gifts, food and clothing. This year, more than 745 families will receive holiday assistance.

To help with the city's effort, the owners of Rave Computer, a supplier and integrator of servers and mobile computers to the U.S. military, original equipment manufacturers, and independent software vendors, donated $1,000 worth of Meijer gift cards that will be distributed to needy families.

"We give because, first of all, we can, but also because we enjoy it," said company CEO and president Rick Darter. "This is the third year we have participated. It is a great program."

In addition to Rave Computer's donation, the Sterling Heights Meijer store donated $750 in gift cards to the city through the store's Simply Give program.

Utica Van Dyke Towing in Sterling Heights also donated $800 in gift cards.

Other groups who have generously donated to the city's holiday assistance program are ARM in Warren, Magna in Novi, three hockey teams from Mount Clemens, Clegg, Guest & Brabant Physical Therapy in Sterling Heights, the Chrysler Sterling Heights Assembly Plant's IT management team, Buff Whelan Chevrolet in Sterling Heights, Home Depot on Van Dyke in Sterling Heights, Jamboozies in Sterling Heights and Global Tooling in Macomb Township.

At Thanksgiving, County Commissioner Ken Lampar helped distribute 25 food baskets and Thread-Craft, Inc. donated 20 turkeys.

"The many groups who have donated to this program have spread holiday cheer through their kindness," said Sterling Heights Mayor Richard J. Notte. "We thank them for their generosity."
