What sets Ebullient cooling systems apart from competing direct-to-chip cooling systems?

Unlike competing systems, Ebullient cooling systems don’t use water or mineral oil to cool electronic devices. Instead, Ebullient systems use 3M Novec engineered fluid. Why don’t competing systems use Novec engineered fluid?

If competitors simply replace water or mineral oil in their cooling systems with Novec, the performance of their systems will actually decrease, since Novec (in single phase) is not as effective at transferring heat as water or mineral oil. Consequently, to move the same amount of heat using Novec, competing systems would need significantly higher flow rates, which would require larger diameter tubing, which is difficult to route and package within servers, and larger pumps, which are more costly and consume more energy. In short, Novec is not a good option for cooling systems that rely on conventional single phase cooling (i.e. simply warming a fluid).

How do Ebullient cooling systems achieve outstanding performance and efficiency using Novec?

Instead of relying on conventional single-phase cooling, Ebullient cooling systems employ a proprietary form of two-phase cooling, known as DirectJet Technology.

What is DirectJet Technology?

DirectJet Technology harnesses the advantages of phase change heat transfer to deliver exceptional performance and efficiency. Novec is vaporized within proprietary DirectJet modules and absorbs roughly 12 times more heat than oil cooling and 6 times more heat than water cooling, per volumetric flow rate. This means that Ebullient systems achieve excellent cooling performance while only flowing a small amount of fluid, which allows small diameter tubing to be used, which is easy to route in any server (even blades), and allows small, cost-effective, energy-efficient pumps to be used.
